The cache is placed in the North Pennines AONB near the route up to Thack Moor from Scalehouses. There are few paths and tracks around but as it is open access land, you have the right to wander freely on foot and explore the wild open landscapes.
You will get fantastic views over the Solway Firth, across a beautiful patchwork of green fields in the Eden valley to the hills of the Lake district and around to the Howgills
You “have the right to wander freely” says the government but there are certain restrictions, for example:
You must keep your dog on a lead no more than 2 metres long on open access land:
- between 1 March and 31 July - to protect ground-nesting birds
- at all times around livestock
As this is a grouse moor, there may be additional restrictions, particularly for dog owners, at certain times of year.
