Another path down to Albertson Avenue, you are looking for a pill bottle, bring your own pen. The street was named after George Albertson who was born in Port Chalmers and was the Director of Housing Construction in 1948. The houses here were state houses, built between 1949 and 1952 on the reclaimed land.
A bit of Mussel Bay was reclaimed before the 1st world war. Then in 1920-21 the council put a tunnel through from what was going to become Back Beach to Mussel Bay. Then finally in 1932 the Harbour Board finished reclaiming Logan Park and it was time for Mussel Bay. Sand from the harbour dredge was pumped through a pipeline, through the tunnel and into Mussel Bay.
It took until 1939 and then some sand was also pumped onto the foreshore at the harbour end of the tunnel to make a sandy beach, that's why it got called Back Beach. You can still see the end of the tunnel with a grate over it behind the Sewarage Control box at Back Beach
