Quem foi Bento de Jesus Caraça?
Ilústre matemático e antifascista, fundador da Universidade Popular Portuguesa e da Biblioteca Cosmos, direccionou toda a sua actividade intelectual e cívica para a cultura integral do índividuo. Bento de Jesus Caraça nasceu em Vila Viçosa a 18 de Abril de 1901 e com ele o universo cultural da matemática portuguesa ganhou uma nova dimensão. Impulsionou os estudos de Econometria em Portugal, criou o Centro de Estudos de Matemáticas Aplicadas à Economia e fundou a “Gazeta da Matemática”. Publicou vários estudos até à sua mais notável obra, “Conceitos Fundamentais da Matemática”, publicada pela pioneira Biblioteca Cosmos, que fundou em 1941. A criação do Estado Novo levou-o a intensificar a actividade política. Lutou pela liberdade e a democracia. Nunca abdicou dos seus ideais. Tornou-se um dos maiores vultos da intelectualidade portuguesa. Foi um semeador de Cultura e Cidadania. Faleceu em Março de 1948.
