Geocache Description:

Tusks - Where Ivoryton Got Its Name

In the mid 1800s, Ivoryton was the biggest importer of ivory in the world.  Ivoryton is one of the three villages of Essex, which includes Essex, Centerbrook and Ivoryton.  The town was so named because it was reported that ivory was shipped here by the ton. Pratt, Read & Company set up shop in Deep River while Comstock, Cheney & Company operated in Ivoryton. In 1936, the two companies merged and continued work at the Ivoryton location where the facilities were more modern. The merged company was called, Pratt, Read & Company. The last shipment of ivory to Ivoryton was in 1954, after which time, plastics took over the piano keyboard industry.

This cache is located in a small town park in Ivoryton. The park is adjacent to the famous Ivoryton Playhouse and across the street from the Ivoryton Public Library. The Ivoryton Inn entrance is also visible from the cache site. While you will not be hunting elephants for their ivory, you will be hunting a geocache container for a prize.

Congratulations to Riley and Melissa of the DocBurch clan who sought and were FTF the Tusks!
