Geocache Description:

Cache Is Not At The Posted Coordinates

Mr. Toot is the mascot not only of the North Iowa Band Festival, but also for Mason City as a whole. His image has appeared on everything from T-Shirts to business cards to city light poles. Now his image also appears on the geocaching map just south of Mason City Iowa. Each of these puzzles will include a fact or story in theme with the art series. Some may also include a question or two for you to answer correctly to find the coordinates.

Band Fest

By 1941, 56 high school bands participated in the North Iowa Band Festival.  This same year, Japanese planes bombed Pearl Harbor and America joined World War II.  A small festival was held in 1942, but there were no further festivals until 1946.

This copy of the Honolulu Star-Bulletin was the 1st EXTRA put out showing only six known dead.

Sidebar:

At the same time we have been working on producing this geoart the remains of a sailor were just identified and brought home to rest.

OSAGE | First Class Seaman Leon Arickx is coming home to Mitchell County after being considered missing in action for nearly 75 years.  Arickx's status changed on Jan. 30 when he was identified through DNA testing. U.S. military confirmed he was a casualty when the USS Oklahoma sunk during Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor. Thirty-five who were on the ship have been identified, among the 499 sailors and Marines killed on Dec. 7, 1941.
