Tudor Times: "For a quart of ale is a dish for a king."
William Shakespeare
from: 'The Winter's Tale' (1610-1) act 4, sc. 2, l. 1.
In Tudor times ale was generally the main beverage as water was polluted and tended to make people ill. The process of making ale necessitated boiling water along with its additives and that plus the resulting alcohol content made ale a much safer beverage. Because of the grains used to create it, ale was also a nutritious supplement to a meal. In those days it tended to have a very low alcohol content, usually less than 1%. Making the ale for home use was typically the house wife's task.
