Hidden at the high point of Mills Reservation are a few cliff-like rock outcroppings and a large cement circle. It's a bizarre find, nestled in the woods. Why is it there?
Well, no one is quite sure. There are a few stories, ranging from it was the base for mining equipment to part of a searchlight or watch post during World War II. It's also true that several of these stories may be true. (Here is an article about the area from the local paper.)
The view is spectacular. On a clear day (and when the foliage isn't too thick), you can see as far as the Verrazano Bridge, the New York City skyline, and the Statue of Liberty. This remains a popular spot for birdwatchers (including the Montclair Hawk Watch) and for those out hiking on the trails who stumble across it.
Sit on the nearby bench, enjoy the view, then find the cache! Please re-hide carefully.
