The Giant's Graveyard
The victorian walled garden, locally known as the Giant's Graveyard is in quiet corner of the Dean Castle Country Park. The walled garden was originally used to grow food and once belonged to Assloss House to the north of the park. It had been abandoned due to the location being unsuitable (it was a frost pocket) but is now being used by a community project.
The cache area is frequented by natterer's bats, brown hare and yellow hammer birds. When placing the cache I found evidence of woodpeckers on a nearby tree.
From the main car park the walled garden is around a 15 minute walk and the path takes you along the River Ayr, past the 14th century Dean Castle (currently closed for renovation) and through the farm park. Closer to the cache the path is above a steep high bank which offers views of the walled garden and Craufurdland Water.
The cache is a micro. Bring your own pen.
