Norsk:

Towards the end of the 1800’s there was extensive whaling taking place in Finnmark, which the fishermen were strongly opposed to. They argued that the whales chased the fish closer to the shoreline, and that the whales therefore were essential to the coastal fishing. After several bad years of fishing in the early 1900’s, the resistance to whaling increased, and several attempts were made to get the parliament to put a ban on whaling. When the parliament in 1903 yet another time postponed the case, approximately 1200 angry fishermen attacked the whaling station in Mehamn and levelled it with the ground. For the first and only time in newer history in Norway, military forces were brought in to re-establish law and order. This dramatic event is known as the “Mehamn battle”. The battle took place in June, and in December the same year a ban was formed on whaling along the coast of Norway.
