Geocache Description:

After the evacuation of 338,226 British troops of the BEF (British Expeditionary Force) from the beaches of Dunkirk from 26th May to 4th June 1940. The British government prepared the nation for the possible invasion from the German army, known as the Wehrmacht. It was decided that a series of defensive lines would be put in place across the country to try to stop the invading army. In July 1940 work started on the eastern command line which stretches from Wivenhoe in Essex to Mildenhall in Suffolk. It was to consist of a natural or artificial tank obstacle covered with pill boxes. The section from Wivenhoe to wakes Colne viaduct was constructed by the 15th Div Royal Engineers. At Wakes Colne you can still see one of the many pill boxes that still exist along with large concrete blocks, which were put in place to stop tanks coming under the viaduct and make them use the road, straight into the sights of the 6 pound anti-tank gun, which many of the pill boxes had. The river Colne was one of these natural defenses used along with the man made ones. At the published coordinates you can see one of the more unusual defenses, a wall that looks as though it belongs on top of a castle. This was used as part of the eastern command line or more locally, the Colchester command line. Let your mind take you back to 1941 when this defense was complete. The bridge and surrounding area would have been bristling with machine guns and anti-tank guns. To find the final location of the cache you need to find the following information. As you arrived at this location from east street you passed a cycle path sign, here you will find the numbers required. Hythe Station A1/2 minutes University 1B minutes Wivenhoe 1C minutes The co-ordinates for the final location are N 51 53 33(C-2) E 0 5A 87(B+1). The cache is in a recycled container, like in WW2 i had to "make do and mend". All you have to do is "DON'T PANIC!!!", "Keep calm and carry on" and give a jolly wave to those "digging for victory".
