URBAN FOREST 2 Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

jupiterpearl: After 200 hides - remarkable - the area is a little trampled.
Not being a premium cache any more - it has been left not in it proper place by novice cachers - no disrespect - I am glad I was able to provide the experience to cachers of all levels -
I have a new one planned for the area .

Geocache Description:

I have a liking for old and new railway lines - As boys, my brothers and I used to walk the Puffing Billy Track between Cockatoo and Gembrook little knowing it was going to be replaced years later. You may have traveled the Rosstown Railway Trail between Oakleigh and Elsternwick with its series of caches. The new SKYRAIL has recently opened between Oakleigh and Caulfield.

There is probably no chance the Outer and Inner circle railway lines will be replaced but we have these lovely linear parks and forests in urban areas preserved in their wake.

The Outer Circle Railway line ran from Fairfield to Hughedale but it existed as 3 separate railway lines so passengers would have to change trains. It was first proposed in the 1870's but did not open until 1891. It was a commercial failure and only ran for 5 years in the Hughesdale/ Murrumbeena area - the line into town by then was via the preferred route to South Yarra into Melbourne - especially with goods coming in from Gippsland. The land boom that was expected did not happen along the line. Passenger trains stopped on this section in the late 1890's but the line was used a little longer for the transfer of goods up until the 1920's. The rails were removed in the 1940's and were recycled to provide raw materials for the manufacture of armaments.

Now these parks are great tracks for walking, jogging or bike riding through areas with no car traffic.

This Urban forest was opened by the City of Stonnington in 1985.(the City of Malvern then)

At the Waverley Road end of the park there was a good spot for a second cache in this forest.

This cache is not too far from the legendary Suburban backyard cache in the same Urban Forest and north of the other Urban Forest cache.

As Waverley Road has no parking, if coming by car, there is a car park in Bruce Street where this plaque is located

The best approach to GZ is from Waverley Road. Do not attempt to bush bash from the Car Park! Geocachers respect the forest and bushland and there is an easy way to find this cache pretty quickly and not create geotracks everywhere. The cache is near a pedestrian crossing where cars stop, so choose your approach carefully. You are looking for a small conical container suitable to the environmental theme with a unique log, pencil, and an instant scratchie for the FTF. FTF goes to Cherryslice88

Please wedge carefully back into place.
