Geocache Description:

Hyskeir (Oigh Sgier) Lighthouse viewed from close to the landing steps!

Nendrum.

Nendrum Monastic Site can be found on the western shore of Strangford Lough. It is one of the best surviving examples of a pre-Norman, medieval Irish monastery. Saint Machaoi, or Mo-Choi, an associate of St Patrick, founded the church in the 5th century, and a flourishing monastery was established in the 7th century. With no fresh water streams on the island the power of the tides were used to operate a mill wheel.  This is currently the earliest known Tide Mill in the world.

Step back in time and enter the tranquil world of the monks, that was brought to an untimely end when the Vikings sailed up Strangfotd Lough (Strangr Fjöròr) towards the end of the first millennium.

Entry to the historical monastic site is free and parking is available at the posted coordinates.
