Geocache Description:

Description

Tioman Island (Malay: Pulau Tioman) is a mukim and an island in Rompin District, Pahang, Malaysia. It is located 32 kilometres (20 miles) off the east coast of the state, and is some 20 kilometres (12 miles) long and 12 kilometres (7.5 miles) wide. It has eight main villages, the largest and most populous being Kampung Tekek in the north. The densely forested island is sparsely inhabited, and is surrounded by numerous coral reefs, making it a popular scuba diving spot. There are also a lot of resorts and chalets around the island which has duty-free status. The island is covered by very little flat lands and is limited to the coasts, especially around Teluk Juara and Kampung Tekek.

The island is part of Pahang territory, although it is geographically closer to mainland Johor than to mainland Pahang, and is accessed via ferry service from the Johorean coastal town of Mersing.

According to legend, Tioman Island is the final resting place of a beautiful dragon princess. While flying to visit her prince in Singapore, the beautiful maiden stopped to repose in the azure waters of the South China Sea. Enraptured by the beauty of the island, she never left and so Tioman took the form of an island in her image.

In 1970, Time magazine ranked Tioman Island as one of the best ten "desert island escapes" in the world.

Geology

The geology of Pulau Tioman is overlooked by rocky structures dominated by exposed boulder-beds found on the coast of Kampung Paya, Batu Sirau (747m), Nenek Si Mukut (695 m) and thin layer of soil. The very limited flat land and domination of steep slopes on the island further encourages the development of ecotourism as the primary economic activity. The island in general is a volcanic outcrop with several settlements. Tioman boasts of a landscape that is indeed spectacular. Lush jungles from its central mountain creep down to the white-coral, sandy beaches hugging the shores.

Coming with a ferry (there is no regular flight at the moment) to the south and east shore, you will see the double peak twin peaks of Nenek Si Mukut rise to the clouds. Nenek Si Mukut is close to the coast and overlooking the jetty of the small village of Mukut. It does rise very steep into the sky.

Questions to this EC

If you look at the twin peaks of from the south/southeast towards the jetty of Mukut - describe the colour of the Nenek Si Mukut peak and estimate the height the peak is raising out of the rainforest (in meter). Do you have any idea which kind of stone the peak belong to? Why do you guess so?

Please do not put any pictures (showing the peaks), in the log.

You can log immediately after email is sent - if the answers are not correct, we will contact you. Logs without any answers will be deleted after 2 weeks.
