Geocache Description:

East Oro Drill Shed Cairn marks the location where a Drill Shed once stood and the Oro Battalion/Simcoe Foresters would meet. Eight Drill Sheds were constructed in Simcoe County when the Fenian Raids were alarming the country. The small garden in front of the cairn is tended to by the Oro-Medonte Horticultural Society. The cache is not at these coordinates but can be determined by filling in the missing numbers from the plaque on the cairn. Cache to log is at: N 44 A 0. B19 W 79 A 1.C7C A= the hundredth value of the dollar amount the county paid to have the drill shed built B= the fourth number in the year the Drill Shed was taken down C=the last number in the year Wm. E.O'Brien became Leut.-Col. The nearby creek used by early people, is close to the second stage and of historical interest. From a History of Oro-Medonte I copied: "Perhaps as long as 2000 years ago the area was populated by ... mainly the Hurons, who have left us fascinating archaeological sites. French explorers, missionaries and fur traders traveled the region beginning in the 1600s. White settlers began arriving in the 1820s. They came mainly from England, Ireland, and Scotland."
