Geocache Description:

Tramway Hill Reserve is a historical landmark site named after the 12 mile tramway that ran from Kaoota to Margate. The steel tramway was built in 1905 by the Sandfly Collery Company Ltd. In addition to coal, the tramway carried firewood, mill logs, sawn timber, squared logs up to 90ft long, farm produce, small fruits, household goods etc., and was the only practical means of transport for many isolated homes along the route. The land was purchased by the Government in 1916 and leased to the Kingborough Council. The tramway line was removed in 1922.

There is now a lovely walking track which runs through the centre of Tramway Hill Reserve. This short walk takes you across open grassland and through light bush with a forested gully, a small dam and a large picnic shed. Although a little damp under foot during winter, it is the perfect place to take the family (including the dog!) for a picnic during summer, with plenty of room to run around, fly a kite or kick a ball.

The cache is a small container with a log book (please BYO pen) at the time of placement it contained a trackable Koala tag and some small swaps. If you are walking from Tramway Crescent please look out for the plovers who have made a nest in the paddock.

Enjoy!
