Let's explore how the horseshoe has become a symbol of good luck

According to ancient folklore, the inhabitants of current day Northern Europe were small-framed "fairy folk". When traveling Celtic tribes began settling the lands, these tiny original inhabitants, moved to the forests and hid themselves by wearing green. The new settlers told stories about the mysterious, magical "little people", whom they also called elves and goblins, that lived in the woods.
Soon all bad things that happened to the settlers were blamed on the little green forest dwellers. From cows not giving milk or chickens not laying eggs to infertility in couples. There was also stories of babies being kidnapped. However, it was believed that the elves and goblins feared the metal weapons of their enemies, and were afraid of iron.
Therefore, to ward off evil and misfortune from their homes, the people hung iron horseshoes over their front doors, and so the horseshoe became a symbol of luck and good fortune. Which way to hang it is still debatable. Some say pointing upwards, to hold all the luck in for the house on which it is hung, while others point the shoe downwards, so the luck falls on all who pass under it.
