Na području Ustrina među prvima dolaze Iliri, nakon njih Rimljani o čemu svjedoče ostaci rimske vile "Rustica". Nakon njih Ustrine su naselili Slaveni. 1931. godine naselje je imalo 212 stanovnika, dok je osamdeset godina kasnije palo na samo 23 stanovnika. Naselje je podignuto na 180m nadmorske visine radi bolje obrane u slučaju gusarskih napada. Naselje i mještani poznati su po ovčarstvu i ribarstvu. Bogato je ribolovno područje, posebice za plavu ribu, prvenstveno tunu.

The name of "Ustrine" comes from the latin word "ustrina" (a burning). It derives from the ancient practice of burning forests to clear land for gardens and pasture. In 1931, the settlement had 212 inhabitants, and eighty years later it fell to only 23 residents.It's built at a height of 180m above sea level to make it less vulnerable to pirate attacks. Local citizens are known as great fisherman (th local waters are rich fishing grounds for blue fish, especially tuna) and sheep breeders.
