Crumpsall Park is an open green space in north Manchester. It has a fairly formal layout with lawns and trees, owing to its original status as a private residence, Crumpsall Hall. It has been used by local residents since around 1890.
Although the Hall was demolished in the late 19th century, you can still find the original park keeper's lodge. There is also an obelisk monument, which may be remembered by Mancunians of old as that which stood outside HMV on Market Street in the city centre, during Graham Stringer’s time as Council leader.
Whilst there, it became a popular meeting point for local punks, and by the mid-90s, people drinking around it at night made it quite unpopular with the powers that be.
Indeed, rumour has it that the obelisk’s removal was arranged within hours of Stringer’s leadership position coming to an end, although it wasn’t placed in the park until a couple of years later.
This cache is placed very close to the obelisk, with kind permission of Friends of Crumpsall Park, and Manchester City Council.
Please ensure the cache is returned exactly as found to ensure it is not picked up by the wind or spotted by muggles, whilst still being reachable by wheelchair users.
