Welcome to Walcha where wild rivers run. The naming of Walcha is unknown. It could have been derived from Aboriginal origins with the potential meanings of sun, deep waterhole and water. However the spelling of two pastoral properties named Walcha Run and Bergen-op-Zoom suggest it may have origins from the Netherlands. The town of Bergen-op-Zoom is on the Walcheren River.
No8 in the Open Air Gallery is the entrance sign called Black Cockatoo. This sculpture is by Ross Laurie of Walcha and is carved from tallowwood. It was created to keep watch over the Walcha district.
The grand Edwardian mansion to the east is Langford Homestead. This was the original location of the explorer John Oxley's 1818 camp site. Langford was built in 1903.
