Der Rauchkofel (2460m) ist ein Berg in den Karnischen Alpen, nordöstlich des Wolayer Sees. Der höchste Berg der Karnischen Alpen, die Hohe Warte (2780m), steht mit ihrer beeindruckenden Nordwand direkt gegenüber vom Rauchkofel. Man kann den Rauchkofel aus dem Valentintal (beim Plöckenpass) oder aus dem Wolayer Tal (im Lesachtal) besteigen. Die gesamte Aufstiegszeit ist ca. 3 ½ bis 4 Stunden. Der markierte Wandersteig ist im felsdurchsetzten Gipfelbereich recht steil und teilweise mit Drahtseilen versichert. Für gut trainierte und trittsichere Bergwanderer ist es aber sicherlich eine lohnende Bergtour.
Für die Besteigung seien hier 2 Möglichkeiten angeführt:
1.) Von der Unteren Valentinalm (1205m), die während der Almbewirtschaftungszeit von der Plöckenpass-Straße aus mit dem Auto erreichbar ist, wandert man auf dem Karnischen Höhenweg über die Obere Valentinalm in ca. 2 ¼ Std. zum Valentintörl (2138m). Hier zweigt der markierte Steig auf den Rauchkofel nach Norden ab. Zuerst geht es über eine felsdurchsetzte Geländestufe (Seilversicherungen) und durch einen kurzen Graben in ein flaches Kar, dann führt der Steig durch die steilen, grünen Wiesenhänge hinauf zum Gipfelkreuz, zuletzt wieder über Felsstufen mit Seilversicherungen (weitere 1 ¼ Std.).
2.) Vom Parkplatz (1116m) zwischen der Hubertuskapelle und der Unteren Wolayer Alm wandert man über die Schotterstraße in ca. 2 ½ Std. zur Wolayersee Hütte (1967m). Vom Wolayer See kann man dann entweder über das Valentintörl oder direkt zum Rauchkofel aufsteigen (1 ½ Std.).

Rauchkofel (2460m) is a mountain peak in the range „Karnische Alpen / Carnic alps / Alpi Carniche“, northeast of the mountain-lake „Wolayer See / Lago di Volaia“. The highest mountain of the Carnic alps, Hohe Warte / Monte Coglians (2780m) with its imposing north-face, is rising directly opposite of Rauchkofel. You can climb the Rauchkofel from the valley „Valentintal“ (near Plöckenpass) in the east or from the „Wolayer Tal“ (part of the Lesachtal) in the northwest. The ascent takes a total of about 3 ½ to 4 hours. In the rocky summit area the marked hiking trail is quite steep and partly secured with wire ropes. For well-trained and sure-footed hikers it is a rewarding mountain hike for sure.
For climbing Rauchkofel here are 2 options:
1.) From the alp „Untere Valentinalm“ (1205m), which can be reached by car during the alp season (June to September), you hike up to the mountain-notch „Valentintörl“ (2138m), using the trail nr. 403 „Karnischer Höhenweg“. The ascent takes about 2 ¼ hours. From there the marked trail to the Rauchkofel branches off to the north. First the trail leads over rocky terrain, partly secured with wire ropes, and through a short ditch up to a pan/coomb, then you go up through the steep, grassy slopes towards the summit cross, finally again over rocky terrain with wire ropes (another 1 ¼ hours).
2.) From the parking area (1116m) between the chapel „Hubertuskapelle“ and the alp „Untere Wolayer Alm“ you hike on the gravel road in about 2 ½ hours up to the mountain refuge „Wolayersee Hütte“ (1967m). Passing the mountain-lake „Wolayer See“ you can climb up to the Rauchkofel via the mountain-notch „Valentintörl“ or using a more direct and also marked trail (1 ½ hours).
