“Jonny Quest” is a single season cartoon that debuted during primetime in 1964. It is a Hanna-Barbera adventure series featuring five main characters: a boy, Jonny Quest; his scientist father, Dr. Benton C. Quest; his adopted brother from Calcutta, India, Hadji; a government agent that protects them, Roger T. “Race” Bannon; and pet bulldog, Bandit.
There were a total of 26 episodes in the series, which was created by accomplished comic book artist Doug Wildey (1922-1994). “Jonny Quest” differed from other cartoons of the time, such as “The Flintstones,” in that it depicted life-like characters with dramatic plots, stylized artwork and menacing villains, such as Dr. Zin. The music, particularly the opening theme, is a key component and was written by Hoyt Curtin (1922-2000). The show featured futuristic elements, such as hovercrafts and jet packs, and period themes, such as the Space Race. “Jonny Quest” has had updated sequels/re-boots over the years, but the classic, 1964 original generally is considered the best.
Race Bannon is a government agent assigned to protect Jonny Quest after his mother died. He ends up guarding Dr. Quest and Hadji, as well. Race is an expert in judo, a crack shot and also a skilled pilot. Race often watches over Jonny and Hadji and generally is considered an equal part of the group. Race tutors Jonny and Hadji on their schoolwork, guides them through unfamiliar cultural situations and possesses keen insight into some scientific and academic areas.
This series of caches is dedicated to “Jonny Quest,” my favorite cartoon of all time and one that I enjoy watching very much with my son (who is most emphatically NOT a Geocacher).
The 14 caches in this series can be gotten by walking, but you will be in for a long hike. I would recommend bringing a mountain bicycle, or something appropriate to pedal through grass.
