The shabby church building, that you may see across the street from the hiding place, had a really checkered past. Erected in neo-Byzantine style, the church was consecrated in 1898 in the name of the Mother of God the Merciful (because of the greek ikon that was placed there). The parish was mostly cargo port workers and their families, who lived in this area. By the church a charitable society was opened which held an orphanage, an almshouse and an orphan school.
But the Soviet government tended to use sanctuaries for more practical purposes, so in 1932 this church was closed and turned into... a training base for naval divers! There was a huge swimming pool and a recompression chamber inside. Well, at least it was not destroyed as many other churches, but humidity and weight of the inner construction damaded the building, and it started to fall into decay.
The building was returned to the Orthodox church only in 2012. Now it is under reconstruction.
