Mac Cumhaill (otherwise known as Fionn McCoole) was a mythical hunter-warrior of Irish mythology and leader the Fianna (the army of the high kings of Ireland). One of Fionn's favourite pastimes was hunting in the Glenasmole in the Upper Dodder Valley. One of the mountains overlooking Glenasmole is called Seefin, which means "The seat of Fionn". Fionn and the Fianna were supposed to have feasted there after the hunt.
Just inside the boundary wall where a path adjoins the road to Castlekelly Bog, there is a large granite boulder known as Fionn McCoole’s Stone. A marble slab had been set into it which bore the following inscription:
"Finnakoom one of the Irish Giants carried this stone on his shoulder from the opposite Mountain on April 1st 1444. He was 9 feet 7 inches high and weighed 44 stone"
This slab was removed towards the end of the nineteenth century but the mark where it was fixed can still be seen on the stone.
Do you not have to cross the fence boundary lining the road to retrieve the cache.
