Setting the stage:

One of the most influential books published in the field of linguistics during the 20th century was Ferdinand de Saussure’s Course in General Linguistics. He defines a (linguistic) sign as being made up of two components: the signifier (or "sound-image") and the signified (or "concept"). An example can be seen in the image below:
