Geocache Description:

Dalmacija: A geocache series

Dalmatia has existed for some 2000 years and was a part of then Illyria and has survived over the last 2000 years among many different empires and rulers.
In addition to the famous dog breed "Dalmatians" who come from this area, Dalmatia is best known for its rugged and karstified coastal landscape. Around 1000 islands, several national parks and around 1200 kilometers of coastline describe Dalmatia, which stretches from Velebit with its famous tunnel "Sveti Rok" to Dubrovnik. If the "Bura" blows from the north, this strongest wind in the world with up to 250km / h can even force authorities to close the entire highway.
Although Dalmatia has a very long cultural tradition and was already known in antiquity for its wild warriors, but was over all centuries - almost to this day - mainly due to the barren and stony soil always a relatively poor area and a classic emigration country. Formerly used as auxiliary troops by Greeks, Romans, Venetians and Austrians, later the inhabitants became emigrants to America, Argentina, Chile, Australia and New Zealand, and then later to Germany, Austria and Switzerland after World War II.
One of the best part of Dalmatia is the culinary art: puff-thin Dalmatian prosciutto, yellow sheep's cheese and salted anchovies, a few black olives, home-baked white bread, salad of sun-ripened tomatoes and even wine that has been pressed, diluted with water. Beef, pork and lamb steaks are traditionally cooked in Dalmatia on the grid above the open charcoal fire. In the conobas of Central and Southern Dalmatia you can find a specialty: Fish and meat, preferably lamb, are cooked together with potatoes and vegetables under a charcoal heat overflowed metal bell, the peka.

This Cache: Kaštel Benković

[EN]
On the hill above Benkovac there is a small fortress called Kaštel Benković, whose position dominates the entire Benkovac plain. Kaštel Benković is a medieval castle. It dates from the second half of the 15th century. It is classified as a profane architectural heritage. It is not under UNESCO protection. The Benkovac Provincial Museum is located in the castle site. It looks like a square yard in the bottom of which is a tall square tower. The corners of the wall were reinforced by two round towers upgraded during the Turks in the 16th century. Later renovations reduce the impression of the fortress, which as a historical value and architecture of its time represents a monument of the first order of the Benkovac region. From the east southeastern side of the castle there was built the church of St. Ante which was last reconstructed in 1743 into a baroque chapel with a bell tower.
Written sources can be found that Kaštel was built up probably in the 15th century. There are speculations that probably the founding member of the Croatian family Benković was building it. It had a defensive role, and after that it was a residential area for a time and then became a social property.
When the Turks occupied Benkovac, which belonged to Gornja Luka, in 1527, and in the ecclesiastical view to the diocese of Nin, that city became a feud of the beg of Benković from Livno. From the description of the Bosnian beglerbeg Ibrahimpaša from 1620 we find that this little town was perpetrated by a single tower, uninhabited and with little houses, which is repeated in one description from 1624.
The Zadar noble family Begna states that in 1650 Benkovich tower was burned by Carla de Begne. In 1683 Benkovac was liberated from the Turks with other places, but fell under Venetian rule. The Venetian ruled whole of Dalmatia till Austria took over, which lasts until 1918.
The Kaštel is today the center of cultural life of the City of Benkovac, an idyllic stage for various events to the joy of many visitors that the Kaštela area always leaves breathless.
