Geocache Description:

This small petling will bring you to see one of the dozen unique (for Bulgaria and the Balkans) tombs carved into the rocky cliffs of Kamen bryag at the Bulgarian Northern Black sea coast. Most of them consist of two chambers with a dromos (corridor with strairs going underground), only one of them is with three chambers. Their entrances used to have stone covers, but they were robbed that many times in the past that it is a rare case to see any nowadays. The shape of the chambers is trapezoid and on the ceiling of one of them there is a stone-carved bullhead, typical Thracian symbols!.. The way they look is very similar to a dolmen, but without the erected megaliths (menhirs) surrounding them up and outside as you can see examples in the South of Bulgaria (Eastern Rhodopes mountains, mainly). They were used by many tribes for thousands of years, and it is not clear who exactly built them, but there are a few hypothesis: the Thracians, the Scythians (this area was known as the Little Scythia), the Romansthe Sarmatians (the Geologists call the rocks there Sarmatian, otherwise formed some 12 million years ago)and the Goths (as such type of  tombs can be seen in Crimea where they had a kingdom after III c. AD - Crimean Goths) or even more precisely the Thracian Goths. There are evidences (mainly stone-carved crosses, and family burials) showing that the tombs were used by the Byzantines later on, but one thing keeps repeating - the feeling that this rocky cliff is the end/edge of the world, and the best place to do a sacrifice for the Gods and bury the dead, especially the important ones!

So, enjoy the spectacular views here, and if you want to see more tombs of that type go to the left of Yaylata, where there is also a Thracian sanctuary - most probably dedicated to Zalmoxis
