There is a restored grave marker and one of the only ones left in a 300’ by 300’ cemetery with 1400 residents. The county owned facility that stood near here from 1829 to 1915 included 120 acres and a large residence, a working farm, a quarry and this cemetery. This state mandated facility was residence for the poor, sick, homeless, mentally ill, injured or those considered mentally deficient. No one was buried on the site after 1916 and eventually this area was forgotten and sold. In 1993 after discovery of this, the county repurchased the cemetery land and started to clear and maintain the right of way path back to the area. Please be respectful of the area as efforts are still underway to restore it.
The cache is on the fringe of the property and not near the main burial areas. Please do not leave any evidence of your visit but your signature on the log.
