Geocache Description:

This is an easy "park and grab" cache, almost roadside. It's a few hundred meters from the busy N4 and you can see the memorial from the main road. As you approach the memorial, you will see the signs and the well kept entrance gate.

There used to be a cache here years ago, and, as a Geocacher with a keen interest in local military history, this monument cannot go un-cached!

The cache is neither in, nor on, either memorial, but, at the entrance - not far from the information board mounted on the wall.

The Battle of Bergendal was part of the Second Boer War. There are two memorials, a large pylon for Boers, and, a small stone pyramid for the British.

Date 21-27 August 1900

The Battle of Bergendal (also known as the Battle of Belfast or Battle of Dalmanutha) took place here during the Second Anglo-Boer War. The battle will be remembered as the last set-piece battle of the war, although the war was still to last another two years. It was also the last time that the Boers' four 155 mm Creusot Long Tom guns were used in the same battle.

The Bergendal Monument was erected to honour the soldiers killed during the Battle of Bergendal, which was one of the biggest and most significant battles of the Anglo-Boer War at the turn of the 20th century. It took place on this farm, farm Bergendal, when the South African General, General Louis Botha led the local (ZARPS) troops against the British, but was forced to retreat. The remains of those killed in the battle were re-interred under the monument when it was unveiled in 1970.

Sadly, not even this battle achieved peace, and the war continued until 1902, resulting in the loss of many more lives.

History will tell of a British victory without glory and a Boer defeat without shame.
