Dopo la caduta della Repubblica Romana nel 1849 Giuseppe Garibaldi, passando per Terni, Todi, Orvieto, San Marino giunse a Cesenatico il 2 agosto dove si imbarcò con 250 uomini su 13 bragozzi deciso a raggiungere Venezia. Intercettato dagli austriaci, sbarcò a 8 km da Magnavacca (odierna Porto Garibaldi). Iniziò così la Trafila Garibaldina, dopo diversi spostamenti pervenne a questo capanno da cui fu poi condotto a Savio, Ravenna ed infine, percorrendo la via Ravegnana, giunse a Forlì, per poi passare con la guida di Don Giovanni Verità in Toscana, e infine a Genova, sfuggendo agli austriaci.
Il capanno, costruito nel 1810 a uso di caccia, fu distrutto da un incendio nel 1911 e subito ricostruito fedelmente a cura della Società Conservatrice del Capanno Garibaldi che lo custodisce dal 1882. E' tuttora visitabile secondo l'orario seguente:
Partendo dal parcheggio o dal sentiero, vi troverete vicini a grandi complessi industriali in funzione. Mano a mano che vi avvicinerete a questo frammento della storia italiana vi lascerete alle spalle i rumori e gli odori delle fabbriche, immergendovi nella flora del parco del delta del Po. Un percorso breve e quanto mai rappresentativo dell'eroe di due mondi.
