The Arulmighu Maha Sapthakannika Devi Temple (Kanni Kuil) or the Virgin Temple is a Kanniamman temple that was built more than 100 years ago in Bukit Kepayang (Victoria Hills), Seremban. There are seven female dieties found in this temple namely Biramme, Mageswary, Gaumaree, Vyshnavi, Varaagi, Magenthree and Samundy. There is also a Chinese diety and a shrine at the side.
The hill is rich in quartz and you can see fragments of quartz on your trek up the hill as well as on the top of the hill. It is a source of silica to make glass.
There are various mystical tales concerning the temple. Story has it that a contractor rented the place to mine the silica using explosives. He prepared the explosives and followed the normal blasting procedure by drilling holes and placing the explosives inside before detonating them. To his surprise, the dynamite he placed in the holes did not exploded, but were thrown a few metres away. He tried many times but still failed to blast the quartz. Then he engaged an expert to help him blast the rocks. The expert was shocked when the dynamites he fixed not only did not explode but were thrown some distance away like the contractor's.
The expert then went to investigate the mystery. While climbing a big rock to get a better look, he had a shock when he saw a snake just on top of the rock sunning itself. He pulled out his gun in double quick time and managed to kill the snake. From then on, things did not go well for him. He got seriously sick and his workers always involved in some freak accidents.
His spiritual mentor advised him that his mining of the hill had offended the spirit Nagamma who frequented the hill in the form of a snake, a young lady and fragrance. Nagama is angry because of the disturbance and hence the people who did the bad things got sick. The expert and the contractor were advised to perform prayers to ask for forgiveness and to build a temple for Nagamma on the hilltop in order to recover his health, which he did.
Festivals & Pooja
The most important date for this temple is 1st May, whereby a special pooja is conducted annually. Devotees of Nagamma will fast for three days and carry pots filled with milk from the foothill to the hill top. When the devotees arrived at the temple, the milk is poured onto the seven Kanni Devi or the seven virgins. Nagamma gives her blessings during this festive occasion, and this has been witnessed by several devotees.
