Town Name: Duplain
Population: 50
Reason For Becoming A Lost Town: The town didn't live up to expectations and failed to get a railroad to pass through it.
Town History: Duplain started out like many towns that didn't make it. It started out as a paper town. A paper town is a town that is formed on paper without being platted or (sometimes) even scouted first! Agents from Rochester, NY first named the town Rochester Colony and held drawings for the locals to try to win a plot of the town. In 1836, families followed the Maple River and helped establish one of the first towns north of Lansing. Before they finally decided on the name of Duplain, they also tried the name Mapleton. Before the railroads were established, Duplain thrived as a center for trade and commerce. Unfortunatly, they could not convince the Ann Arbor Railroad Company to build a railroad to their community and suffered as a result of that. Despite building roads and offering land for cheap, they could not compete against Elsie and St. Johns and eventually lost most of their residents and businesses. Duplain now survives with a church, a park, and a handful of locals.
