This cache is part of a series of caches on the Great Florida Birding Trail for my Girl Scout Gold Award project. The purpose is to teach people about the birds native to the area so they can learn more about the birds and how to protect them and their environment.
This cache is located at the Chain of Lakes Park, located at 2300 Truman Scarborough Way, Titusville, FL 32796, and is open 24 hours. The park is pretty big so I suggest you bring a bike.
American Redstart
Characteristics
- A medium-sized warbler with a relatively wide, flat bill and fairly long tail
- Mostly black or grey with bright orange patches on the sides, wings, and tail, the belly is white
Behavior
- Incredibly active insectivores that seem never to stand still
- They rapidly spread their cocked tails, exposing the orange or yellow in a quick flash
Conservation Status
- Still widespread and very common, but surveys suggest that numbers may be declining slightly
Habitat
- Breed in open wooded habitats, particularly those dominated by deciduous trees
- Attracted also to roadside trees, shrubby and tree-lined stream banks, and ponds
Interesting Facts
- The bright patches and quick hopping seems to startle insect prey and give the birds an opportunity to catch them
