This quest will take you over the Prince Alfred’s pass (R339), the most direct route from Knysna to the R62. Once a bridle path used for centuries by locals and forest elephants, work on this mountain pass commenced in 1860 and was completed by 1867 in time for a visit by Prince Alfred in person.
At 68.5 km it is the longest (publicly accessible) mountain pass in South Africa by a considerable margin, as well as being the second oldest unaltered pass still in use.
Take a moment to pause here on your journey, admire an interactive piece of artwork and reflect on times gone by when the giants of Africa dwelt here at leisure.
This is an easy Park and Grab but the container is small and contains nothing but a logsheet and pencil.
Please remember - take nothing but pictures and leave nothing but footprints !
