On September 16th 2018 the Town of Ajax unveiled a monument for women, known as Bomb Girls, who worked at Defence Industries Limited (DIL), a munitions factory built in what became Ajax in 1941.
This is the first monument of its kind to commemorate the war efforts of woman in Canada. Funds were raised by local women including woman who worked in the factories. The munitions factory, to be operated by Defence Industries Limited (DIL), would require 9,000 workers to produce munitions throughout the years. Over 7,000 of these workers were women, who came from cities, farms and villages across Canada.
St. Jacobs sculptor Tim Schmalz was commissioned to design and sculpt the memorial.

Side #1 you will see a depiction of the “Bomb Girls” at work on the assembly line.
Side #2 you will see a depiction of soldiers after landing on the beaches on D-Day.
