Geocache Description:


Showa Commemorative National Government Park is a national government park in Akishima and Tachikawa, Tokyo, Japan. The park covers 180 hectares. The park was opened in 1978. It was established in 1983 as part of a project to commemorate the Golden Jubilee of the Showa emperor. There is an entrance fee to enter the park. Bicycles may be rented in the park, which has an 11 kilometer bike trail with parking areas for bicycles throughout the park. There is also an outdoor barbecue area. Bicycles and unicycles can be rented for 250 to 400 yen for 3 hours. Rowboats and paddle boats can be rented 600 yen and 600 yen respectively. Other activities  that can be enjoyed in the park are putt putt golf, disk golf, croquet, lawn bowls, horseshoes, futsal 3 on 3, orienteering and play areas for children.

Showa Park in Pop Culture

The music video for dj TAKA's and Kanako Hoshino's song "DROP" was filmed here. The song was featured in the arcade version of Dance Dance Revolution X2 as well as Beatmania IIDX 17: Sirius. The location also plays a major role in the visual novel Kanon, since one of the main characters, Shiori, likes to hang out by the fountain in the eastern part of the park.

Access

In December the park has an illumination that features Christmas lighting.

The park can be best accessed from Nishi-Tachikawa Station on the JR Ome line or a 15 to 20 minute walk from JR Tachikawa Station or Seibu Musashi-Sunagawa Station. There is car park at the Tachikawa Gate and the Sunagawa Gate. Parking cost 1,700 yen for large vehicles, 800 yen for passenger cars and 250 for motorcycles.

Starting on Showa Day there are several days throughout the year when entrance to the park is free. Please note that on these days the park is very crowded and the parking lots soon fill up.

The park is closed on December 31, January 1 and the fourth Monday in February and the day following.

国営昭和記念公園は、昭和天皇御在位五十年記念事業の一環として、現在及び将来を担う国民が自然的環境の中で健全な心身を育み、英知を養う場とするために、戦後米軍が旧陸軍施設を接収した東京都立川市と昭島市の両市にまたがる立川基地跡地のうち、180haを記念公園として建設することが閣議決定され、「緑の回復と人間性の向上」をテーマに1978年(昭和53年)度より国土交通省の手で施設整備が進められてきた。1983年(昭和58年)10月26日、昭和天皇御臨席のもとに約70haで開園した後、レインボープールや子供の森、日本庭園、砂川口、盆栽苑等次々と施設が整備され、2005年(平成17年)11月にはみどりの文化ゾーンが共用された。全面開園に向けて現在も建設工事が続けられている。

概要

立川基地跡に開設されており、レクリエーション施設としての面もあるが、大規模な震災や火災が発生した場合は、避難場所としての機能を果たすよう設計されており、立川市と昭島市の広域避難場所の一つに指定されている。例えば、園路はスムーズに避難を行うために幅が広く作られており、芝生が広がるみんなの原っぱは避難所として、立川口駐車場・みどりの文化ゾーンは救援隊のベースキャンプ・救護所・物資集積所などとして活用できる。また、防災関係機関が所在する立川広域防災基地が公園に隣接している。
