This is one of a line of 21 surviving milestones along the former Norwich to Thetford turnpike, created in its entirety in 1766 and lasting until 1870. More details on this milestone can be found on the Norfolk Heritage Explorer. If possible I will try and place caches near as many of these milestones as possible, although as I know a few are beside the main A11 I may have to get inventive to make the caches accessible!
The cache is located as near to the milestone as possible - the actual milestone is still on the edge of the line of the original road which has been bypassed when the road, formerly the A11, was straightened. As a result it is well hidden in the trees to the south-east of the current road, roughly level with the cache location. It seems there was a planning application in 2011 to move it to the side of the current road but this was withdrawn, so it's stayed hidden at the base of a tree and is just about visible from the footpath/cycleway.
Your best bet for parking is in the nearby Churchfields estate and it's a short walk to GZ, or you can cycle right up to the cache!
A cache near a milestone. If you wish to set a milestone cache then please contact Marcusmaximi who is keeping track of the numbers. You may have to check on the 'magic' map to make sure that a particular milestone is not a scheduled ancient monument or somesuch.
