W ostatnich latach XX wieku Warszawa coraz śmielej zmierzała w kierunku europejskiej metropolii. Z roku na rok zwiększała się powierzchnia biurowa w Warszawie. Umysły mieszkańców najbardziej rozpalały oczywiście wieżowce – Ilmet przy al. Jana Pawła II (1997), Warszawskie Centrum Finansowe przy ul. Emilii Plater (1999) oraz drugi co do wysokości wieżowiec w Warszawie – po Pałacu Kultury i Nauki – Warszawskie Centrum Daewoo przy ul. Chłodnej (1999). Kompleks dwóch nieco mniejszych biurowców powstał także w miejscu kina „Moskwa” przy ul. Puławskiej (1999), jednak w czasie budowy doszło do załamania się jednej ze ścian zabezpieczających plac budowy – ponad 50 metrów jezdni ul. Chocimskiej spłynęło do wykopu, a kamienica nr 22 musiała zostać specjalnie zabezpieczona. Biura znalazły się także w dość ciekawych inwestycjach, jak w murach odbudowanego pałacu Jabłonowskich na pl. Teatralnym (1997) – z tego powodu pomnik Bohaterów Warszawy musiał zostać przeniesiony w mniej eksponowane miejsce przy Trasie W-Z, a przy okazji odbudowano także kościół św. Andrzeja i św. Alberta (1999) – oraz w dwóch częściowo przebudowanych budynkach administracyjnych dawnych Zakładów Radiowych przy ul. Kasprzaka (1997). Spośród innych budynków należy wyróżnić także zaprojektowany przez Piotra Szaroszyka budynek mieszkalny „Park Residence” (1999) przy ul. Podchorążych, w którym znalazły się najdroższe i najelegantsze mieszkania na wynajem, czy zaprojektowany przez Marka Budzyńskiego gmach Sądów na pl. Krasińskich (1999), pokryty zielonkawym szkłem, łacińskimi sentencjami prawniczymi oraz uzupełniony przejazdem dla samochodów nawiązującym do przedwojennego układu drogowego. Wciąż unowocześniana Huta Warszawa rozbudowana została o nową stalownię (1997), pierwszą linię metra przedłużono do stacji „Centrum” (1998), a na Ursynowie otwarto Multikino (1999) – pierwszy w Warszawie multipleks z kilkunastoma salami kinowymi. Odsłonięto pomnik Więzionych i Straconych w „Toledo” (1997) przy ul. Namysłowskiej i pomnik Bohaterów Monte Cassino (1999) przy ul. Andersa, na pl. Małachowskiego stanął odtworzony pomnik Peowiaka (1999), a na Rynek Starego Miasta wrócił odnowiony pomnik Syrenki (1999). Przywrócono tradycyjną nazwę Cmentarza Wojskowego (1998), a Akademia Teologii Katolickiej została przekształcona w Uniwersytet Kardynała Stefana Wyszyńskiego (1999). Rozpoczęto także przygotowania do budowy ogromnego osiedla na Błoniach Wilanowskich wraz ze Świątynią Opatrzności Bożej. Ponadto w czerwcu 1999 roku Warszawę po raz ostatni odwiedził papież Jan Paweł II – celebrował mszę świętą na pl. Piłsudskiego, a także wziął udział w odsłonięciu pomnika Armii Krajowej przy ul. Wiejskiej i nowego gmachu Biblioteki Uniwersytetu Warszawskiego przy ul. Dobrej. Nowy gmach, zaprojektowany przez Marka Budzyńskiego, wpisał się w miasto wyjątkową architekturą z tablicami prezentującymi zapis dzieł ludzkiej kultury, korytarzami półek bibliotecznych z prostym dostępem oraz ogólnodostępnym ogrodem na dachu.
A] W 1999 roku Szkoła Główna Gospodarstwa Wiejskiego, właściciel obszernych terenów w zachodniej części Wilanowa, odsprzedał ziemię firmie Prokom z założeniem wybudowania w tym miejscu dużego zespołu mieszkaniowego. ENG – The task is simple! Read a brief historical text, and then answer five questions. Three of them respond to the text you have read, for the fourth answer you will need to look by yourself, and the final fifth answer will respond to the fact not mentioned in the text, but is related to one of the older texts of "Story of Warsaw".
In the last years of the 20th century, Warsaw moved more and more boldly to become the European metropolis. The office space was increasing every year. The hottest investments were of course skyscrapers – Ilmet at Jana Pawła II Av. (1997), Warsaw Financial Center at Emilii Plater St. (1999) or the Warsaw Daewoo Center at Chłodna St. (1999), which was also the second tallest building in Warsaw, right after the Palace of Culture and Science. A complex of two significantly smaller office buildings was created at Puławska St., in the place of the former “Moskwa” cinema, but during the construction works there was a collapse of one of the walls securing the construction zone. More than 50 metres of ground with a street was drained to the construction area, and the tenement house at 22 Chocimska St. had to be secured in a special way. Offices were also located in several other interesting investments, like in the reconstructed Jabłonowskich Palace at Teatralny Sq. (1997) – for that reason the Monument to the Heroes of Warsaw had to be moved to a less exposed place at W-Z Route, but the Church of St. Andrew and St. Albert was reconstructed at the same time – or in two partially reconstructed administrative buildings of the former Marcin Kasprzak Radio Factory (1997). Among the other buildings two more objects had to be distinguished – “Park Residence” residential building at Podchorążych St. (1999), designed by Piotr Szaroszyk as a building with the most expensive flats for rent, and the House of the Courts at Krasińskich Sq. (1999), designed by Marek Budzyński, covered with green-like glass, Latin sentences and passage for cars, which referred to the pre-war road connection in that area. The Huta Warszawa Steelworks was modernized and extended by new steelworks’ buildings (1997), the M1 metro line was extended to “Centrum” station (1998), and in Ursynów the Multikino was opened (1999), which was the very first multiplex cinema in Warsaw. Several monuments have been unveiled – of the Prisoners of “Toledo” Prison at Namysłowska St. (1997), of the Heroes of Monte Cassino at Andersa St. (1998), reconstructed monument of Polish Military Organisation at Małachowskiego Sq. (1999) and relocated monument of the Mermaid (1999), that went back to the Old Town Market Square. The traditional name of the Military Cemetery (1998) was restored, and the Academy of Catholic Theology was transformed into Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński University (1999). Preparations for the construction of a huge housing estate in the Wilanów area and the Temple of Divine Providence over there begun. Finally, in June 1999, the Pope John Paul II visited Warsaw for the last time – he celebrated the Holy Mass at Piłsudskiego Sq., he also took part in the unveiling of the Monument of the Home Army at Wiejska St. and opening the new edifice of the Library of Warsaw University at Dobra Street. The new building was designed by Marek Budzyński, who put it perfectly in the area, by creating the unique architecture with plaques showing the records of human culture, the corridors of library shelves with simple access and an accessible roof garden.
A] In 1999 the Warsaw University of Life Sciences, who owned large areas in the western part of Wilanów district, sold the land to Prokom company with the intention of building a large housing complex there. Therefore, the municipal authorities started works on the local development plan, and in the central point they marked out a place for an exceptional facility of historic importance.
