The name means little lion. The breed originated in Tibet, in the early days it was known as the Lhasa Lion dog, associated with Buddhist mythology. Theories say that it was a cross between the Pekingese and the Lhasa Apso.
After the end of the Imperial rule in China, the little dogs might have disappeared, spurned as a reminder of bygone days. However, fortunately some had been presented to foreigners, in particular General Douglas and Lady Brownrigg. They and others took some of the dogs to England. All modern Shih Tzus descend from only 14 dogs!
