Namiyoke Inari Shrine is a Shinto shrine located near the former Tsukiji market. After the Great Fire of Meireki in 1657, landfill construction of Tsukiji was done, but the construction was difficult due to rough waves. One evening in the midst of the construction, an object of worship that casted light and floated on the surface of the sea was found, and a shrine was built to worship it at the present location in 1659. Because then the waves fell and the construction progressed smoothly, the shrine came to called “Namiyoke (protection from waves) Inari” and came to gather faith in misery and other things. In the precincts there are many stone monuments that have been dedicated by the Tsukiji market people, such as the egg mound, the sushi mound, the shrimp mound, the monkfish mound, the live fish mound, and the clam stone.

A cache is hidden near the Namiyoke Inari Shrine. Please bring your own pen.
