L'ossario di Pianto Romano è un monumento dedicato alla battaglia contro l'esercito borbonico di Calatafimi ed ai caduti dei Mille di Garibaldi. Il memoriale si compone del monumento composto da un obelisco alto 30 m con all'interno il vero e proprio ossario e poi del viale delle rimembranze, un sentiero circondato da cipressi e di targhe commemorative, il quale termina con un altro monumento, vocato a riportare la celebre frase di Garibaldi "Qui si fa l'Italia o si muore".
L'appello iniziale per la costruzione di un monumento, che raccogliesse i resti dei caduti e ricordasse la battaglia di Calatafimi del 15 maggio 1860, fu lanciato il 9 settembre dello stesso anno da un comitato di abitanti del piccolo centro. Fu progettato nel 1885 da Ernesto Basile, ma fu solo il 15 maggio 1892 che il sindaco Salvatore Cabasino, alla presenza del generale Paolo D'Oncieu de la Bâtie rappresentante del re Umberto I, poté inaugurare il sacrario di Pianto Romano.
Il monumento sorge proprio nella sommità dell'altura che fu teatro della battaglia, a qualche chilometro dal centro abitato di Calatafimi, e ha la forma di un obelisco. Contiene un ossario dove sono custodite le spoglie dei caduti, garibaldini, picciotti e borbonici, e altri cimeli.

Das Beinhaus des Pianto Romano ist ein Denkmal, das der Schlacht gegen die Bourbonenarmee von Calatafimi und den Gefallenen von Garibaldis Tausend gewidmet ist. Das Denkmal besteht aus einem 30 m hohen Obelisken mit dem eigentlichen Beinhaus und der Erinnerungsallee, einem von Zypressen und Gedenktafeln umgebenen Weg, der mit einem weiteren Denkmal endet, das für die Berichterstattung geeignet ist der berühmte Satz von Garibaldi "Hier machst du Italien oder du stirbst".
Der erste Aufruf zum Bau eines Denkmals, das die Überreste der Gefallenen sammelte und an die Schlacht von Calatafimi am 15. Mai 1860 erinnerte, wurde am 9. September desselben Jahres von einem Komitee von Einwohnern der Kleinstadt gestartet. Es wurde 1885 von Ernesto Basile entworfen, aber erst am 15. Mai 1892 konnte der Bürgermeister Salvatore Cabasino in Anwesenheit von General Paolo D'Oncieu de la Bâtie, Vertreter von König Umberto I., das Pianto Romano-Heiligtum einweihen.
Das Denkmal steht ganz oben auf dem Hügel, auf dem die Schlacht stattfand, wenige Kilometer von der Stadt Calatafimi entfernt und hat die Form eines Obelisken. Es enthält ein Beinhaus, in dem die Überreste der Gefallenen, Garibaldi, Picciotti und Bourbon sowie andere Erinnerungsstücke aufbewahrt werden.

The Pianto Romano ossuary is a monument dedicated to the battle against the Bourbon army of Calatafimi and to the fallen of Garibaldi's Thousand. The memorial consists of the monument composed of an obelisk 30 m high with the actual ossuary inside and then the avenue of remembrances, a path surrounded by cypresses and commemorative plaques, which ends with another monument, suitable for reporting the famous phrase of Garibaldi "Here you make Italy or you die".
The initial appeal for the construction of a monument, which collected the remains of the fallen and recalled the battle of Calatafimi on 15 May 1860, was launched on 9 September of the same year by a committee of inhabitants of the small town. It was designed in 1885 by Ernesto Basile, but it was only on 15 May 1892 that the mayor Salvatore Cabasino, in the presence of General Paolo D'Oncieu de la Bâtie, representative of King Umberto I, was able to inaugurate the Pianto Romano shrine.
The monument stands right at the top of the hill that was the scene of the battle, a few kilometers from the town of Calatafimi, and has the shape of an obelisk. It contains an ossuary where the remains of the fallen, Garibaldi, Picciotti and Bourbon, and other memorabilia are kept.
