Geocache Description:

You are looking for a magnetic key safe located on the bridge. This is not your average guard-rail cache. Be careful during heavy rains because Stuckey Bridge Road is a dirt road and can be very slippery.

Congratulations to CaneMaster and RockThrower on their intrepid adventure through the dark and stormy night to earn "The First to Find (FTF). You can read about his "misadventure" in the comments below.

This bridge was first built in around 1849 as part of the stagecoach route that carried the mail southwest out of Meridian.  The bridge was rebuilt by the Virginia Bridge & Iron Company in 1901.  In the middle of the project, construction workers began discovering bodies buried within the banks of the Chunky River near the bridge.

On some weekends and especially Halloween, local teens from area high schools and curiosity seekers from East Central Mississippi journey to the bridge to try to see the ghost of Ole Man Stuckey.

According to the legion, Ole Man Stuckey was a member of the Dalton Gang.  He was getting up in years, and did not want to continue ridin’ with the gang.  One day, he decided to end his profession of pilfering, robbin’ and stealin’ and started thinking about a less dangerous profession.  Stuckey left the gang and ended up in Mississippi, where he aimed to settle down to an honest way of life.

With his profits from the gang, Stuckey purchased an inn near the old bridge.  The coaches that carried the mail south out of Meridian had few passengers.  So, each night Stuckey would stand on the bridge with his lantern signaling the flat-boaters and rafters traveling the river.  Stuckey offered them a soft bed and a hot meal.  Many took the old man up on his offer.

During the evening, as Ole Man Stuckey served the food and drinks to his guest, he would listen to their stories and could tell who had money by their boasting and bragging.  Stuckey was generous with the Ale, making sure that the tired bodies of the travelers would be in a deep sleep from the alcohol.

During the night, after the boaters retired to their rooms and passed out, Ole Man Stuckey would sneak into their rooms, cut their throats, steal their valuables and bury their bodies in the banks of the Chunky River.

After a while, the number of his victims reached 25 and most of Stuckey’s neighbors were taking about the strange goings on at the Stuckey Inn.

One night, a large crowd stormed the inn where they found Stuckey with several bodies that the Ole Man had just murdered. The crowd dragged Stuckey from his inn down to the bridge and hung him. Stuckey hung there for five days.  When they him cut down, his body fell into the water under the bridge.

Some locals, who have visited the bridge at night, have seen an old man with a lantern walking along the banks of the Chunky River.  Others, while standing on the bridge have heard a loud splashing sound coming from under the bridge and saw an eerie glow where the splash occurred.  Some have even seen Stuckey’s body hanging from the bridge.

In the comments below, you can write about anything you experienced at the bridge.
