Geocache Description:

Cache #44

I have wanted to put a multi in Walla Walla for a while – it is a town with an interesting German history in this part of the world. This a simple multi with clues found at each of the waypoints.

WP1 – Soldier’s Memorial Hall (WP1a added for alternative questions)

At the starting location you will find information on the first Butcher’s Shop and the Soldier’s Memorial Hall on Commercial Street. From the information signs and the buildings find the following information (note this sign is curently unreadable - I have added alternative questions from a sign across the road)

The first butcher shop was opened in 19A9? (The first official post office was located at 7Commercial Street?)

Soldiers suggested a Memorial Hall be built on B December 1920? (The trunk line from Culcairn to Walla was started in 192B?)

The date above the doorway on the Soldiers’ Memorial Hall is 192C?

The Literary Institute measures D6 feet by 30 feet? (in 1944 the post office was opened at 6D Commercial Street?)

Look across the road to the building on the junction of Commercial and Queen Streets (above Burrumbuttock 13). For some reason it reminds me of an ambulance station but I am not certain what it’s history is. The date of the building (in steel) is 19E0?

WP2 – Zion Lutheran Church

The Lutheran Church is an integral part of the settlement of this region (there are a number of caches associated with various churches around the region including one behind the nearby wagon). The information sign and plaques on the buildings provide the following information

The building of the current church commenced in 1923. Total cost of the building was £979F?

The plaque (in German) contains the date 24 August 192G?

The plaque on the Zion’s Church Hall & Sunday School has two years – 1889 and 19H9?

WP3 – Walla Walla Cemetery

The information is on the sign at the entrance to the cemetery. Take the time to explore the cemetery and find out more about the settlers in this area.

The cemetery was dedicated on 15 August 18J1?

The first child buried in the cemetery was A.P. Piltz on 22 April 18K9?

Final can be located at:

E 146 BG.KFH

The final is a quick drive away and is a typical camouflaged 400ml Sistema hidden in the usual way - contains a FTF Geocoin as well! Look out for snakes in the warmer months and park carefully as there will be the occasional car. Toilets are available near Waypoint 1.

Enjoy!

FTF - Congratulations JohnoMawbs
