This is a pleasant hike from a pretty little park and lake in San
Marcos, up a hill on a paved access road, suitable for the whole
family. You will enjoy the sweeping vistas that unfold beneath you
as you progress up the hill.
As you’re hiking, look above you. See the trees on that peak?
That’s Double Peak, the site of the “San Diego Ocean View” cache.
Don’t worry, you won’t be going up to the top for this cache, but
if you would like an extra challenge, continue on up the hill to
the top of Double Peak. That hike is more strenuous, involves some
boulder scrambling and a bit of bushwhacking at the end to find the
“Ocean View” cache, but the views just keep getting better and
better.
My 14 year old daughter and her friends have been up there with
me, and they love the view from the top. It’s worth carrying
binoculars.

2005 NOTE: I placed this cache in 2001. What was then beautiful,
quiet fragrant chaparral is now a gated housing subdivision. I'm
amazed that the cache has lived to this ripe old age, dodging fence
builders, excavators, bull dozers, earthmovers and God knows what
else. It's a sign from God that geocaching is meant to be.
Start at Lakeview Park at Discovery Lake in San Marcos (at
Foxhall and Buckthorn). It's an easy hike with great views. Thomas
