AR_Historic Fairhaven Village Mystery Cache

This cache has been archived.

Geocaching HQ Admin: From June 06, 2018 until March 06, 2019, Geocaching HQ conducted an Augmented Reality (AR) experiment. During that time, cache owners were allowed to submit Mystery Caches that required the finder to download and use an AR app to find the cache. The goal of the experiment was to see how the geocaching community would use AR technology. Cache owners placed more than 600 AR caches around the world!

Unfortunately, the AR apps which met HQ’s requirements for the experiment have been or are currently in the process of being discontinued. As a result, it is currently not possible for finders to have the AR experience that was originally intended. Therefore, HQ has decided to archive all active AR caches placed during the experiment period. We are respectfully requesting that all AR cache owners please remove the cache container and contents as soon as possible.

As technology evolves, we look forward to seeing how Augmented Reality might have future applications for geocaching. Thank you to all cache owners who participated in the experiment!

Geocache Description:

The cache is not located at the posted coordinates. Rather, this augmented reality experience will take you to a few of Fairhaven's historic landmarks; after you have visited the locations in the experience, you will be given the final coordinates for the physical cache. This is not a "play anywhere" experience. In order for this experience to function properly, you must start within 30 meters of the posted coordinates.

To find the cache, you must first download the Metaverse app to your smart phone, tablet or GPS-enabled device. If you need WiFi to download the app, see the Fairhaven Library waypoint. For IOS devices, download this app. For Android devices, download this app. Devices with newer Android OS may not be able to download Metaverse. Scroll down for alternative solving method.

Once you have downloaded the Metaverse app, simply search for "Historic Fairhaven Village" and start the AR experience. Alternatively, you can locate the Historic Fairhaven Village Metaverse experience by scanning this QR code:

“This cache is part of an experiment that allows the use of Augmented Reality (AR) apps to find the cache. At the end of this experiment, Geocaching HQ intends to grandfather published AR caches. Geocaching HQ reserves the right to archive this cache at any time if conditions change. If you have found this cache and would like to give feedback on your experience, please fill out this survey.”

Alternative solution method:

See waypoints for Pharmacy, Terminal Building, Post Office, and Firehouse. At each location, enter the answer into linked Certitude checker. If your answer is correct, you will receive part of the final coordinates. This approximates the Metaverse experience and is intended for those who have newer Android devices that cannot download the Metaverse app. It is recommended that you visit the locations in the given order.

Welcome to Fairhaven! This area has a rich history and this short tour will show you a few of its historic structures.

  1. Pharmacy. The building on the NW corner of 12th Street and Harris Avenue was the local pharmacy until 2016.  Proceed to the north side of the building and answer the following question: What year did George Finnegan purchase the pharmacy? Answer here.
  2. Terminal BuildingThe oldest continuously occupied commercial building in the Fairhaven Historic District is the Terminal Building on the northeast corner of 11th Street and Harris Avenue. Built in the High Victorian Italianate style, this structure was first called the Evans-Fick Block after two of its owners Evan Evans and Henry Fick. Sadly, the Terminal Building was consumed by a catastrophic fire in 2023, 135 years after it was built. What year was the Terminal Building built? Answer here.
  3. Post Office: The building occupied by Skylark's restaurant has served many uses over the years. It has undergone a number of structural changes that have relegated the building to "secondary historic significance" as part of the Fairhaven Historic District. What artifact from merry old England stands to the south of the old Post Office? Answer is a single letter: Phone Booth=A, . Double Decker Bus=B, London Bridge=C. Answer here.
  4. Firehouse: This facility, designed in the Spanish Mission revival style by architect F. Stanley Piper, was constructed in 1927 for $15,000 and housed a crew of six firefighters plus equipment. What is the number of the bus that stops here? Answer here.
