A series to celebrate the 100 year history of the RAF
1918-2018
The Avro Vulcan (later Hawker Siddeley Vulcan from July 1963) is a jet-powered tailless delta wing high-altitude strategic bomber, which was operated by the Royal Air Force (RAF) from 1956 until 1984.
The Royal Air Force was founded on the 1st April 1918 and is the oldest independent air force in the world.
Since the RAF’s formation this service has played a significant roll in the defence of the United Kingdom and British military history.
The RAF played a pivotal role in the defence of the country in the Second World War when it took part in its most famous campaign ‘The Battle of Britain’ without the RAF the outcome of the war could have been very different.
Some of the most iconic aircraft were developed and commissioned during the war years from the Spitfire to the Lancaster Bomber. At the same time developments in many other innovations and ideas were developed for example radar.
