Cette œuvre de métal brut intégrée à un bassin est un cri de protestation contre l’apartheid. Elle affecte la forme d’un L renversé au bout duquel surgit une main de fer dressée derrière un grillage, tel un appel à l’aide. L’artiste s’est inspiré d’une photo montrant la main d’un Noir sud-africain derrière des barreaux.

Cette sculpture-fontaine spectaculaire évoque la puissance de l’eau comme source d’énergie et de développement. L’eau jaillit entre de grandes plaques de métal qui semblent projetées vers le ciel par la force de l’élément naturel, rappelant le soulèvement des plaques tectoniques. Cette énergie qu’engendre le chaos, une fois canalisée par le génie humain, devient l’instrument du progrès.

Quarante chaises disposées deux à deux jalonnent l’allée piétonne. Elles sont marquées d’extraits de poèmes écrits par quarante auteurs québécois de différentes époques. Ils « disent, le temps d’une pause, ce que nous avons été, ce que nous sommes et le bonheur de la rencontre ». Le parcours dresse ainsi un portrait de société depuis les origines de la ville jusqu’à nos jours. L’œuvre est un don de la Ville de Montréal.

This crude metal work integrated into a basin is a cry of protest against apartheid. It affects the shape of an inverted L at the end of which emerges an iron hand standing behind a fence, like a call for help.
