Lemon Pig 2019 Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

the hiking viking: Accompanied cache2burn to my cache today. He is the last finder. Good thing I did as the Lemon Pig of 2019 was split in two pieces. One found at GZ and the other half found about 20 feet away on the shoreline. ☹️ Bison tube however was not recovered. Bummer. Removed all of it. Cache is finito. Thanks for hunting.

Geocache Description:

You are looking for the lucky Lemon Pig of 2019. cheeky. Find it and have great Geocaching luck all year long.

Parking waypoint provided, there are many other places to park, your choice. Enjoy the nice hike to this cache. It’s near the Grand River on Plainfield city property. Expect some mud and thorns. Easily avoidable if you choose your path wisely. I’d jump into the woods from the White Pine Trail when it’s easy, only gets worse further down the trail.

Scrolling through the Inter-webs one night, came across an article on “Atlas Obscura” talking about the lucky New Year’s Lemon Pig. In 2017, a cookbook author posted a picture of a zesty Lemon Pig on Twitter and stated, “For luck in the New Year, a Lemon Piglet is a must!” cheeky. She found info about Lemon Pigs in a home entertaining book that was published in 1971. Turns out, Lemon Pigs have been around longer than that. The oldest known reference to Lemon Pigs was from a magazine article from 1882! For the next several years after that, newspapers also instructed readers how to craft these. These Lemon Pigs were geared towards children as they were cheap and easy craft projects for them to help ring in the New Year, alongside “walnut witches” and “cornhusk dolls”. Children entertainment books contained Lemon Pigs until the 1960s then they just sorta faded away.

Many cultures, races, and ethnicities have great New Years traditions that they celebrate every year. Here’s one more tradition to start in your house no matter where you come from. You need; a lemon, toothpicks for legs, cloves for eyes, twisted foil for a tail? Be creative! Others have made Lime Pigs and Mandarin Pigs! If you do make one, post a pic and I'll update the cache page to show it along with credit to you!

FYI… Atlas Obscura lists the “the world’s most wondrous places as well as travel tips, articles, strange facts, and unique events.

Name must be on the paper log to log online.
