Geocache Description:

This cache is located on a walking path between Brooklands and the main part of Crookwell.

In February 1909, the freezing works (Crookwell Refridgerating Company) were opened.  My research suggests that the freezing works were in the building now occupied by a hardware store across the road from Spud Murphy's. The demand for a freezing works came about due to the growth in the rabbit trapping and sheep grazing industries in the area.

In the early 1900s through to the 1930s and 1940s rabbit trapping was quite a lucrative occupation.  Trappers were making 3-4 pounds each week after expenses.  Men were moving from Sydney to Crookwell and other rabbit infested areas attracted by this remuneration. At times, the volume of labourers moving to rabbit trapping caused labour shortages in other industries - eg shearing, fencing and potato harvesting.  Based on comparisons to other similar sized towns, it is likely that somewhere between 80 and 150 Crookwell residents earned their income from rabbit trapping - that is a very significant percentage of the town.
