On this date in 1979 the Iranian Revolution also known as the 1979 revolution occurs. The Shah of Iran Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi, the leader of Iran since 1941, is forced to flee the country when his army mutinies and violent demonstrations in the streets against his rule. The Shah is replaced by an Islamic republic under the Grand Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini.
