Green Monday is an annual festival which denotes the first day of Lent for the Greek Orthodox faith, and is a day when Cypriots take to the countryside and socialize with family, friends and neighbours whilst eating picnics and flying kites. We aways join in the tradition if we are on island and thought it would be nice to share it with fellow cachers this year so come join us on a green area near our home and celebrate Green Monday in the traditional style.
For Orthodox Cypriots it's the first of forty days of "fasting" which means no meat, dairy produce or eggs for the whole period. As the forty days continue, dietary laws become stricter with even precious olive oil being restricted for those wishing to take Holy Communion and whole families start on Green Monday with fresh vegetables, octopus and a special bread baked only on this day.
No restrictions for those attending our event though - bring your picnic consisting of whatever you would like to eat and drink, Cyprus residents please bring picnic chairs and tables and don't worry if it's wet as we'll move indoors if necessary. All welcome and even more so if you bring a kite! It would be nice if we all brought an additional dish of something to share but it's not compulsory, we'll just be pleased to spend time with everyone.
We'll start at 1200 and will be there for at least an hour.
